The visual novel concept has been growing in popularity since Beyonce's seminal 'Lemonade' redefined the combination of songs and visuals in pop culture, and Ed Sheeran has pushed the boat out in similar fashion for latest album 'Subtract'. He's entrusted the whole project to director Mia Barnes, who demonstrates an innate understanding of the intimacy the songwriter wishes to achieve with his fans. Sheeran's music is less exciting and sonically diverse than that featured on 'Lemonade', and the visuals are accordingly stripped back. Rather than dynamic moments of choreography or wild costume changes, 'Dusty' focuses on the playful domestic routine of preparing breakfast with a child. It's a perfectly warm, wholesome accompaniment to the laid back tune, and shows that the director totally grokked her subject's creative intentions from the jump.
