DoorDash
'Worker's Lament'
16 November 2023 60s
Snowballs to this.
by Andrew MacGregor

The employees in this sixty-second DoorDash commercial are fed up—jolly fed up. Long hours, irate customers, Mariah Carey on repeat… it's a seasonal slog for everyone on shift. The only way they can express their anger is through song (and it's not 'All I Want for Christmas is You').

Directed by Camila Zapiola, 'Worker's Lament' is all about the trials and tribulations of festive retail. It's like Horde Mode in 'Gears of War' or Zombies in 'Call of Duty'—just wave after wave of customers with only a fake smile for protection. Even Santa's ready to pack it in.

Ditto one of his elves, who downloads the DoorDash app and learns how easy it is to enrol. It's a lovely eureka moment, as the elf swaps his hat for a helmet, hitches a ride with a delivery driver, and sings "I quit!" in a decent falsetto. The reality may not be quite so idyllic, but the ad dangles a sense of agency well.
