'Ridiculous Excuses'

Exclusively Embarrassing
by Syd Briscoe

Down Syndrome charities all over the world come together in collaboration with CoorDown for World Down Syndrome Day 2023. This film highlights just some of the real excuses people have been given while being barred from taking part in normal life, simply due to stigma and misunderstanding about their condition.

Each heightened vignette presents a different scenario in which a person is blocked from joining in with their peers. Whether it's a child being unable to go on a school trip because the people running it "aren't prepared," or a parent being told that a summer camp already has "one of those kids," it offers a striking but sadly not shocking insight into living with a disability.

A final scene, in which a student is clearly upset and disappointed after being turned away from a drama class, doesn't end with a sarcastic jingle - emphasising the very real hurt caused by people who are unwilling to be inclusive. Others' awkwardness shouldn't preclude those with Down Syndrome from thriving, something the campaign makes clear in uncompromising fashion.
