Chevrolet
'A Holiday to Remember'
26 November 2023 5 mins 26s
Too long by half.
by Jason Stone

DAVID wants to admire this piece of work because of its noble aims, but it's too earnest and far too long. It's not often that we can genuinely say a commercial should have been three minutes shorter, but we really can in this case. Obviously, with a runtime of five-and-a-half minutes, this version isn't likely to be shown on television, so perhaps there is a shorter edit out there. We certainly hope so.

It may well be that Chevrolet and agency Commonwealth // McCann decided a storyline concerning dementia merited the size of this canvas, and it's hard to argue with that without sounding like an insensitive oaf. But, at DAVID, it's sometimes our responsibility to don the clothes of an insensitive oaf, and this is one of those occasions. The seriousness of dementia doesn't excuse indisciplined storytelling, and there's no doubt this ad would benefit considerably from being shortened to a maximum of two minutes.

It has been received positively on social media, partly because the John Denver song has a lot of resonance, but this film clearly evokes memories of grandparents lost to the fog of mental decline in their latter years, and that is prompting an emotional response. We are big enough to admit that the opinions of commenters on YouTube probably matter more than ours, but not enough to alter our opinion.
