Work Woes
by Syd Briscoe

A touching father-son relationship is gently unveiled in this sweet commercial for Cadbury. Building on the brand's current focus on small moments of human connection, director Steve Rogers painstakingly teases out the tenderness between parent and child throughout the spot, as the son phones his dad to see how the first day at a new job went.

The focus is entirely on the father here, with his son appearing over speakerphone as the man admits that he feels old and out of touch compared to his new colleagues. Stretches of awkward silence are particularly well played, as the son carefully constructs the most comforting answer he can.

It's a charming look at the little incidents which soothe the sting of even difficult life events, and one which will feel particularly relatable as economic pressures force many into career shake-ups or returning to work. A bar of chocolate can't fix everything, the film suggests, but the reminder that someone has thought about your feelings goes a long way.
