Comedy writer/ performer Issa Rae is 'inspired' by American Express when she goes out to dinner, drawing ideas from the interactions of the people around her. Director Rohan Blair-Mangat coaxes fantastic performances from the 'actors' in the drama Rae is constructing, and imbues the whole film with a great deal of charm. Issa Rae, as you'd expect, provides pitch perfect delivery, which contributes to a very sincere advocacy for the advertised financial service. Every element of this commercial has been perfectly executed, from the casting, to the comic interplay between the narrator and her playthings, to the choice of music and the part played by American Express in all of the interactions. This is an advertiser that's always at its best when it reminds the audience that it is providing a meaningful 'membership' rather than a financial service, and Blair-Mangat has landed this idea perfectly.
