Appy New Year
by Jason Stone

All the emotional stops have been pulled out in this touching, and ultimately heartbreaking film offering a reminder of all the different ways we can stay in touch using the advertised communication platform. Director Nicolai Fuglsig weaves together several stories centred on separation, bound by the universal desire to wish our nearest and dearest a 'Happy New Year'.

The sense of detachment engendered by two-and-a-half years of pandemic has taken possession of us now, and become – to use that awful phrase – the new normal. That's not to say that separateness wasn't a feature before, just that it now feels like it's a permanent presence in our lives. It's a gap which has been very effectively bridged by technology... and WhatsApp has established itself as one of the most personal ways to be in contact with those we love when we are unable to enjoy their corporeality.

Fuglsig skilfully blindsides us with the payoff at the end, allowing it to land a real gut punch, and a reminder that the communication made possible by apps such as these can be truly profound.
