Under pressure.

In this American commercial for Volkswagen, there's a witty examination of the pressure felt by Chelsea's US footballer Christian Pulisic. As we witness how younger iterations of the sports star have coped with the expectations of all and sundry, we begin to understand how he has been shaped by adversity and pressure.

Carolyn Davies and Matt Page's has been superbly rendered by director Adam Hashemi, and has enough levity to ensure that we don't take the message too seriously. A cameo from Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein adds to the fun in a rapid fire sequence of vignettes excellently edited by Jacob Schulsinger.

VW themselves are admirably low-key, and – in any case – as they're involved in the punchline, this doesn't diminish their presence. The message is simple: the application of pressure creates diamonds like Pulisic... and they cleverly associate their electric car with this proposition.
