Rootless Refugees | |

Millions of refugees have been displaced by the conflict in Ukraine, and even those who made it out of the country safely are likely to suffer the impacts of war for a lifetime. This powerful film from UNCHR and director Andzej Gavriss reminds viewers that there's a very real mental as well as physical fight going on. Slamming doors, sirens, fireworks - all these everyday sounds take on new connotations for people who have seen their homes destroyed and neighbours killed. Their fear is viscerally depicted here, as the cast of real Ukrainian refugees react involuntarily in ways which reveal their trauma. The final image of the characters - all of whom are wearing an item of clothing they were wearing when they fled their homeland - coming together to form a tree to symbolise their rootless status is very poignant, and emphasises the fact that it's only mutual support which will help them through this awful experience. There are battles being fought on many fronts thanks to Russia, some of them entirely internal.
