Song of the Sea | |

Pandemic isolation left many craving human contact, so it's perhaps no surprise that the communal singing style of sea shanties had a wild resurgence in popularity. Nathan Evans - with his viral rendition of 'Wellerman' - led the charge, and he's using his fame for good with this commercial for the UNCHR. The singer has composed 'The Reluctant Shanty' to raise awareness of the plight of refugees - people who, unlike sailors, never wanted to go to sea. The lines are delivered movingly by three people fleeing conflict, with a lack of musical accompaniment emphasising their desperate circumstances. It's powerful work, shot in stripped-back fashion by Kyra Bartley and DOP James Brown. A child amidst a sea of life jackets is a particularly moving image, reminding viewers that many haven't even had the power of their own agency when it comes to escaping untenable situations.
