A good song leaves you wanting more, and Sudan Archives' Selfish Soul is a prime example. The latest track from Brittney Denise Parks is just under two-and-a-half minutes long, and its blend of anthemic drums, lofty vocals, and flourishes of violin make repeat listens a no-brainer. The same applies to Parks's razor-sharp commentary on Black hair in the media ("If I wear it straight will they like me more/Like those girls on front covers?") and her own spin on self-care ("About time I embrace myself and soul/Time I feed my selfish soul"). For once, life advice that's easy to swallow. There are also some bravura images nestled throughout the accompanying promo, such as Parks playing her violin while wrapped around a pole or her bald head nestled amongst afros and dreadlocks. Now if you don't mind, we're about to play it again.
