Birds of a feather. | |
by Andrew MacGregor | |
|
Jessica Bishopp's measured documentary focuses on Mya Bambrick and Arjun Dutta, a pair of teenage birdwatchers who are already experts in their field. Nature drew both Bambrick and Dutta out of their shells, and that confidence makes them ideal ambassadors for a pastime that craves fresh eyes. Fresh ears are also important, as both impress with their knowledge of bird calls and audio equipment (also, kudos to sound designer Jamie Parera). Straight away, you understand why Bambrick, Dutta, and their peers spend as much time as possible in this soundscape. Yet Bishopp is also careful to show that her cast are well-rounded human beings, eager to teach other teenagers the ropes, deliver online/in-person talks, and relax with friends. Even if you don't give a hoot about bird watching, it's heartening to know that likeable individuals like these do.
