'Shadowboxer'
10 August 2022 2 mins 42s
A spar too far.
by Andrew MacGregor

Daniel Liakh and Dan Boulton direct this well-observed spoof of gritty sports films and the psychology of boxing. Tony (Drew Gregg) trains like all four major heavyweight belts are on the line, while his inner monologue charts the rivalry to end all rivalries: the one between Tony and, erm, his shadow.

It's been a one-sided fight for years, and Tony's silhouette (also Gregg) has had enough. He wants to break this contract once and for all, encouraging other shadows beaten black and blue to follow suit. Alas, the bloodlust in Tony's eyes suggests he's not ready for retirement.

From the piano line that accompanies the training montage to the shadow's antsy indignation at his lot in life, Liakh and Boulton nail each element. We never thought we'd see Police Squad's shadowboxing gag fleshed out so well.
