Rina Sawayama
'Hold The Girl'
7 August 2022 4 mins 30s

There's a powerful and triumphant narrative about accepting one's inner self at the heart of this promo for Rina Sawayama's 'Hold The Girl'. The film opens with the Japanese-British singer attempting to throw herself off the roof of an isolated house... only to end up back in the same room she just left.

as the film unfolds, it becomes apparent that she's stuck in an infinite loo , prevented from escaping her prison by an invisible barrier. It's an effective metaphor for the limiting effects of trauma, particularly combined with lyrics about reaching inside to comfort the person you once were.

The final breakthrough comes when the artist literally cracks the floorboards of the house to find a modern version of herself, embraced by a group of dancers. This is thought provoking work from Ali Kurr, adding another great promo to the director's long-standing visual collaboration with Sawayama.
