Redemption.
by Lateefah Jones

This film touchingly describes the struggles faced by ex-offenders once they’re released from prison. The stark black and white visuals are used to great effect as we witness Randolpho’s release from prison and his attempts to start rebuilding a life. We see him facing roadblock after roadblock and can understand his frustration when we see him breaking into a car. He had sincerely tried to make change but perhaps the obstacles he faced were too many and too great to overcome.

The misdirection is revealed when we see that Randolpho is actually performing an act of heroism by saving a baby from inside a trapped car. It's an inspiring twist and one which demonstrates that real change and ultimately redemption is a possible outcome for former prisoners. The message “If you can be good at something, it can be something good” reiterates that view.

Responsa have done a great job by making an ad which will resonate, and encourage their target audience to believe that there is life after prison. They show the difference that can be made by practical support and how jobs can be attainable.

This film also helps build consideration and empathy within the wider community, and demonstrates that ex-offenders do deserve another chance, and could perhaps be the best amongst us if allowed the opportunity. For schemes like this to work, companies need to collaborate and provide jobs for ex-offenders. Employers such as Timpson - the UK’s largest shoe repairer, key cutter, engraver and watch repairer are a remarkable example of this. Timpson’s 2,400-strong workforce includes 89 ex-offenders who trained at prison workshops run by the company. Their track record over the years for training and rehabilitating ex-offenders is a praiseworthy one and perhaps other companies around the world will be encouraged into matching what they do, after watching a film like this.
