Triathlete Nicola Spirig's unprecedented drive and determination is captured in this intriguing film for On Running. The five minute piece follows her quest to end her career with a bang by finishing a long-distance triathlon in under eight hours - a feat no woman has ever achieved so far. It's a competitor's spirit that sets them apart from the rest, the athlete explains, the intangible part of them which can't be seen but can very much be felt. The promise of glory can't sustain them through the miles, after all - it's a deeper passion which keeps them putting one foot in front of the other. Director Andrew Telling effectively ramps up the drama as he captures the aftermath of Spirig suffering a serious bike accident just three months before her final event, though her stoic attitude never wavers. It makes the emotional pay off of her smashing her last race all the more impactful, encouraging viewers to go for their goals no matter how impossible they seem.
