Juneteenth
'#JuneteenthThoughts'
20 June 2022 2 mins 10s
It's good to talk.
by Lateefah Jones

Triggered by observing a white couple drinking from coffee cups decorated in Juneteenth colours a conversation opens between two Black colleagues. They debate the pros and cons of recognising the Juneteenth date as a national holiday enjoyed by all. The conversation is centred on the idea that discussion should be encouraged and even the ‘uncomfortable’ reason that the date is significant should be addressed and talked about.

The Black American population still faces inequalities in treatment and opportunities which makes it clear that a grim part of American history has still not been fully resolved.

The film highlights the danger that Juneteenth could easily become trivialised into a day of sales and empty gestures, and does so in a thoughtful and appropriate way which will encourage open-minded viewers of the need for discourse and reconciliation.
