'Summer of Music'
8 August 2022 2 mins
Remote listening.
by Jason Stone

This collection of films advertising the BBC's music offerings demonstrates how immersive the former can be. In each iteration, craftily filmed close-ups create the impression that the protagonist is attending the music event which is being described, but – in each case – they are in an altogether different location.

These are beautifully compiled films by Rogue's Joe Connor with each element contributing cleverly to create work which is more than the sum of its parts.

Advances in both phone and headphone technology have made it possible to lose yourself in music, and this has been captured perfectly in these films.

And what with Covid and that, it's become the preference of a lot of people to remotely enjoy festivals rather than being there... with all that that entails. These promotional films inherently suggest that the only aspects you'd miss out on are strangers exhaling in your face; long queues to unpleasant toilet facilities; and waking up to discover that your tent and all your other belongings have been stolen in the night.
