'While You Were Sleeping'
19 August 2021 5 mins 05s
Night lives.
by Syd Briscoe

This languid short film explores the lives of the night shift workers who keep America running. Director Anderson Wright captures the oddly still atmosphere of empty buildings, his subjects moving through delicate, composed shots of lecture halls, bowling alleys, and laundromats like Edward Hopper paintings.

This static approach allows the audience to become utterly absorbed as the film unspools over the course of five minutes, while comments about graft behind the scenes as an immigrant add an extra layer of poignancy. The film feels like a snapshot of a liminal space - a fleeting moment in time which will disappear the instant the sun rises over it.
