Budding superstar.
by Jason Stone

Actor Zach Woods – a young stalwart of Armando Iannucci's projects – has co-written and directed this little gem with a sensitivity you would never anticipate from his on-screen persona… actors, eh!

The film opens with a conversation in a restaurant between a father and his daughter Maddie. It's her seventh birthday, and they're enjoying a familiar ritual which will, she hopes, end with a song from a man with a big guitar, as it has on previous birthdays. But something is up, and it's not clear what it is.

The tenderness of their exchange is slowly being eclipsed by a reaction that his presence is generating among the other patrons of the restaurant. It's not clear what he's done to cause such offence, but you literally lean forward in your seat in your eagerness to see how it will unfold.

Like us, little Maddie has no idea what is happening, and the way this plays out across the face of Everly Carganilla – the seven-year-old who plays her – is something to behold. This is a young actor whose talent sits in the vicinity of Shirley Temple, and her performance is heartbreaking. As the situation spirals out of control, we feel every teardrop of her distress and confusion.

Established screen actor Michael Peña plays his part to perfection too. His exhibition of fatherly love and pride is so touching that, by the time we start to understand he has done something terrible to provoke such opprobrium, we instinctively feel we should stand by him.

There is no tidy dénouement to sate our curiosity and this momentarily feels like a disappointment, but you swiftly recognise that this is because we're understanding everything from the point of view of a young child, and we don't know what's going on, because she doesn't know what's going on.

It's a really fantastic film, and a tremendous showcase for its director... and even more so for its young star.
