'Clean Sheets'

A clean break.
by Andrew MacGregor

An immigrant cleaner enjoys the good life - or something like it - for the day in this short film by Archer's Mark director Robin Mason. Deposited in London's leafy suburbs and given an aloof welcome by her employer, Sonia (Jenny Bond) decides to make a house a home while she's alone.

As Bessie Smith's soothing vocals waft through the house, Sonia gradually sheds her everyday skin and becomes a lady of the manor, wine glass in hand and an evening dress on her back. Mason and DP David Bird maintain an intimate, dreamy tone as she grasps that special something as if it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. Alas, Sonia's fantasy receives an unpleasant stain.

Bond gives an engaging performance as Sonia caresses the house's various trifles and accoutrements as if she were exploring another world. Without uttering a word, we grasp both her infatuation with her employers' lifestyle and her subsequent dismay at the sleaze beneath the lustre. Her final look to the camera is an accompaniment to the tale's bitter sting.
