You have to give credit to Google for asking director Adam Morse to helm this Super Bowl spot for them. Morse is blind, and the events depicted in this commercial are his lived experience, but you don't need to know about the directors sight difficulties to appreciate the beauty of this film. Morse has created a tableau of life which is incredibly life-affirming, and the fact that it created such a positive reaction during the big game is no little wonder.
Speaking of little wonders, the voice-over is provided by none other than Stevie Wonder, a decision which reinforces the messaging as Wonder is also blind.
It says much about the power of this commercial that it succeeds in drawing attention to a feature that only a tiny minority of the audience will ever need without remotely making us feel as though this is not a message we need to hear. Advertising at its best makes the whole audience feel good, whether they are being targeted by it or not... something that should always be borne in mind
