'Stigma'

A stark choice.
by Jason Stone

Forty years after a series of public information films about HIV that traumatised a generation, the medical picture for those who contract it is much changed. The 1980s films voiced by John Hurt were designed to be scary because, at that time, an HIV positive test was widely considered to be a death sentence. Advances in antiviral medicine mean that it's a very different story today... but, this isn't widely known.

As this heartbreaking film makes clear, many people are still terrified of HIV. So much so that the stigma that surrounds it can be more harmful than discovering you have tested positive.

Director Stuart Langfield has ensured that audiences deeply feel the rejection that comes the way of the protagonists, and the film cleverly presents the viewer with a choice... do they want to be as heartless as those portrayed in it, or display compassion when it's most needed?
