Lives play out in shadow in this atmospheric commercial for Porter's Paints. The Aussie effort makes creative use of light throughout its 30" run, in order to both showcase the advertised decorating tool and create a homey, comforting atmosphere. Different occasions are cast against the walls of a family house, with sound design playing a major role in setting the tone for each one. Clinking glasses at a party, the whine of a worried dog, the relieved sigh of a new homeowner who now feels that the house is theirs - each creates a distinctive feel to match the differing colour of the wall they flicker across. Director Michael Gupta has done a classy job here, allowing the simple concept to remain visually streamlined while still feeling highly relatable. By using shadows rather than characters, anyone watching is able to put themselves into the scene and imagine their own perfect house decoration scenarios... should they ever to be able to afford one of their own, of course.
