This beautifully understated film for Sweden's Childhood Cancer Fund explores the moment in which a young boy is finally able to leave his hospital ward. Directed with the lightest of touches by Joakim Behrman, it's a prime example of a filmmaker who knows when to give a narrative room to breathe. The audience are kept in gentle suspense throughout the film, as it opens with onscreen text alerting us to its subject matter. This sets it apart from other ads in a similar vein, as it doesn't aim for a heartstring-tugging reveal at the very end. Instead, we're wondering about the destination of the central character and his tiny suitcase of possessions. His mission to deliver one of his toys to a friend who can't go home is a moving one, and his lack of visible excitement at the prospect of leaving hospital hints at this being a long road. Childhood cancer may be unavoidable at present, but this poignantly reminds viewers that their support is the key to ending it faster.
