Wherefore art thou, Jeffrey.
by Andrew MacGregor

There's a superb brand of humour we've come to associate with New Zealand over the years, and as you can see from this TVNZ commercial, it's something director Damien Shatford can deliver in spades. One of three droll ads for the broadcaster, this instalment takes place on a dark and stormy night outside Jeffrey's house.

A woman begs him to open the door and give their relationship another chance. "I was wrong—I love you!" she admits, her face a cocktail of rain, tears, and lipstick. Alas, she picked the wrong viewing night to pour her heart out.

Inside, Jeffrey's told that "a French woman is throwing rocks at the window"... but he's too engrossed in Halo to notice. The way his impassive friend stands at the door and says "Jeff" over and over again caps off a wry ode to free-to-air telly.
