Come again?
by Jason Stone

What director wouldn't want to recreate one of the most iconic movie scenes of all time? Certainly not Declan Lowney who must've been chomping at the bit to emulate the most famous scene from 'When Harry Met Sally'. It's a movie moment which has been duplicated a few times before, but most of those have been mere impersonation, lacking a twist to provide originality.

Not so here. A combination of decisions have elevated it way beyond a stock copy of the Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal version.

For a start, the decision to cast older actors gives it an entirely different feel… though, by itself, this wouldn't have achieved a great deal and actually risked making the actors look ridiculous. But Declan Lowney knows exactly what he's doing and by coaxing restrained performances from his principal actors, he's both given them dignity, and maximised the originality and the comedy.

Sometimes, the best way of judging a piece of work is to imagine all the ways it could have gone wrong, and this idea has more pitfalls than a dash through the jungle with Indiana Jones. Unsurprisingly, Lowney has skipped over them with perfect grace and created a really lovely tribute to a great scene.
