'Fred's World'
7 November 2022 60s
The greatest loss.
by Andrew MacGregor

Director Robin Mason delivers a World Cup ad with a difference for Age UK. The film starts in 1966 with Fred and his wife on the sofa for England v West Germany, and though subsequent tournaments (1982, 1990, and 2002) end in disappointment, the couple enjoy every moment together. Alas, 2022 is a different story.

Though scepticism has dominated the build-up to Qatar with good reason, the advertised charity use FIFA's international shitshow showpiece for good here. Football offers comfort to many people, but isolation and grief in old age require more support than Gareth Southgate and his squad can provide.
