BLIND DIRECTOR ADAM MORSE JOINS JOHNNY FOREIGNER
24 November 2023

Given the difficulties of making progress in other areas of diversity, it's perhaps not surprising that even lass progress has been made when it comes to ensuring an equal opportunities approach when it comes to disability. And of all the disabilities which might make it difficult for a director to direct, perhaps the most obvious would be blindness. Yet Adam Morse has taken on precisely this challenge and carry out his directorial duties with sufficient skill to attract the attention of Johnny Foreigner's Olivia Hirschberg..

So how does he do it? Morse's fascinating answer to this question is twofold: first, though legally blind since the age of 19 after being affected by a genetic disorder, he has retained some peripheral vision and by using a specially adapted monitor, he is able to see some of what is being filmed. Second, he uses what he describes as his "his high sensitivity to people's energies".

It certainly works. 'Lucid', Morse's feature film debut as a director which starred Billy Zane, was nominated for the prestigious 'Michael Powell Award' at the Edinburgh Film Festival.

It isn't just as a director that Morse has been a pioneer. The New York Post described him as a 'BLIND ACTION STAR' in a headline after his recurring role in Apple+'s drama 'See'.

Unsurprisingly, he has attracted a lot of press attention over the years. in addition to The New York Post article, he has had coverage in The Guardian, Variety and many other international titles.

In addition to directing narrative fiction, Adam Morse has made a number of TV commercials, some of which can be seen at Johnny Foreigner's website.

His experience includes live-action, CGI, sports choreography, high-speed car sequences, visual FX, models/miniatures, and animation.

Olivia Hirschberg had the same questions as all of us when she first heard about her new signing: "Along with everyone else who I tell I've just taken on a blind director, my first reaction was also, 'how how on earth does that work?' My curiosity to find out led me to dig deeper and eventually meet up with Adam. Instantly taken by his charm, wit, honesty and acute intelligence, I quickly understood that Adam was an incredibly dedicated film-maker who wouldn't let his disability stop him from pursuing his career with immense passion."
