DAVID PLAYS... 'THE SONG OUT OF SPACE'

Move over, Mulder and Scully—FBI agents Stuart Ross and Catherine Armstrong are on the case in 'The Song Out of Space', a point-and-click adventure from Pixel Noire Games. Set in the fictional burg of Gardner, Washington State, the game wears its influences on its heavily pixelated sleeve.

'The X Files', 'Twin Peaks', and HP Lovecraft are obvious touchstones, but so are visual novels like 'JB Harold Murder Club' and 'Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney'. Chuck in some good old-fashioned Cold War paranoia (Ross and Armstrong's superior thinks the Ruskies are behind the grisly goings-on in Gardner) and there's enough to pull you into the investigation.

As it turns out, there's little to sink your teeth into, with few tangents, red herrings, or surprises along the way. Though the dialogue is solid, the odd typo creeps in to break the immersion. There are worse things to spend £5 on though, and it's worth it to see the manic, inappropriate smile on the Gardner police deputy's face.
