 It's the work, stupid.

CARTOON AND COMICS CORNER.
5 September 2018

Most employers would regard watching Family Guy and reading comic books as outright skiving, but not Bartle Bogle Hegarty and McCann London.

While the former have tapped both augmented reality (AR) and Seth MacFarlane's irreverent animation for Samsung, the latter have produced their own anti-discrimination comic book in partnership with D&AD.

The two projects may occupy different ends of the technological scale, but both see the value of a pop culture hit. In the case of Samsung's Doorways installation, it's about immersing punters in one of television's most recognisable homesteads - the Griffin residence.

Through a combination of AR tech and an empty space, users can sample life in 31 Spooner Street… albeit with a few Samsung Intelligent Home appliances included to keep one foot in the real world.

The game allows players to sample the brand's myriad interconnected devices in one sitting. For those wary of blockchain and the internet of things, this slice of Quahog may twist some Luddite arms.

It isn’t every day you get to put a DIY head transplant with a chainsaw into your work!

 ”

As for McCann London's ‘Kkaptionn', the agency's foray into comic book publishing comes with a more altruistic aim: to eradicate bias and unfair recruitment policies through an anonymous - and colourful - application process.

Produced by McCann's Robin Gordon and Ella Monti, the comic - which features everything from aliens to half-man, half-cow hybrids - invites candidates to fill out empty speech bubbles however they see fit. The only personal information provided by potential hirees is a phone number.

For creatives Gordon and Monti, the aim was "to create something with a point of difference that would stand out" and reward creative flair rather than status. The duo add: "It isn't every day you get to put a DIY head transplant with a chainsaw into your work!"

Such madcap largesse has already caught D&AD's eye, with the organisation using the comic in their New Blood Shift night school enrolment. While comic books currently dominate the movie realm, this project eyes similar success in the workplace.
