Hemmings's work is characterised by lessons he learned in the editing suite—imbuing his visuals with a sense of rhythm and timing which elevates even seemingly straightforward narratives. His dance-focused work for Fila, for example, demonstrates both attention to detail and understanding of movement. When one pictures a family dancing in a car, we're sure edgy face paint and chassis-shaking moves aren't the first things that come to mind. It's this experimental streak which makes Hemmings's work so distinctive.
On a more atmospheric note, Hemmings has also received praise for his documentary work with Nowness. His films typically evoke a strong sense of place, and transport the viewer wholesale into a world far beyond their screen. Each project has an authentic, down-to-earth feel despite often delicate narratives, speaking to Hemmings's assured direction. "It's so important to feel like you’re 'there'", Hemmings explains, "and for that world to create layers of meaning and emotion. For me that sense can be as important as any plot point or camera work."
Replete with a wide variety of projects across commercials, music promos, and documentaries, it's safe to say Hemmings's reel ticks many important boxes. His work at RadicalMedia will supplement an already busy schedule, which includes a move into shooting short films ('The Kicked Dog' hits the festival circuit soon) and developing projects around Hemmings's personal interest in climate change and climate refugees. Needless to say, his move into the European commercial sector is one to keep an eye on.
