TALKING FILM WITH ALEX DUNNING
6 September 2022

Earlier this summer, DAVID had the opportunity to speak to creative-turned-director Alex Dunning who recently joined the roster at Flipt

Dunning is an amiable but ambitious young man with a penchant for populist cinema, and he candidly described why he felt compelled to quit agency life in favour of directing.

Listen for yourself, as Alex Dunning reveals how coming from a large family meant he spent much of his childhood alone in his room building an encyclopedic knowledge of inappropriate films, and how he hopes this will help him as he builds his directing career.

During the course of our conversation, Alex Dunning mentioned two recent film projects. The first is his entry in this year's Straight 8 Industry Shootout. Eschewing the comic approach adopted by most entrants, Dunning struck a plaintive and sentimental note instead.

The second film he drew attention to is a tribute to his mother, a former nurse who decided to take up triathlons, many years after giving birth to the last of her eight children.

Alex Dunning has set his sights on building a successful directing career with a searing determination. Often this kind of ambition manifests itself as an unattractive single-mindedness, but not in this case.

Dunning is charming, and self-deprecating and DAVID won't be the last person making his acquaintance who hopes that all his aims are achieved.
