GAME ON FOR ADAM BUTCHER AND HOI POLLOI.
17 April 2020

Hoi Polloi’s Adam Butcher knows all about playing the long game. He spent thirteen years making his own 2D side-scrolling puzzle game, ‘Tobias and the Dark Sceptres’, while also forging a career as a writer-director. All work and all play, so to speak.

Butcher’s twin passions ultimately led to his well-received short film ‘The Game That Time Forgot’, and a spot on Vimeo’s Best of 2014 list. Boasting nostalgic visuals and self-deprecating humour, Butcher's seven-minute film appeals to gamers and non-gamers alike.

Having conquered the world of no-budget game development, Butcher moved into commercials and short-form content with Red Bee Media and latterly BBC Creative. His reel is chock-full of work promoting the likes of Doctor Who, Blue Peter, and BBC Radio 2.

This is a really strange time for filmmakers... I hope to keep making stuff that hooks people and makes them laugh.

 ”

He now joins Hoi Polloi’s commercial roster, albeit during an industry-wide lockdown. Butcher, however, remains optimistic: “This is a really strange time for filmmakers. Thankfully, some of the work I’ve enjoyed creating the most has completely avoided ‘normal’ live-action footage."

Whether using animation, archive footage, mixed-media, or just “good ol’ fashioned cardboard and Sellotape”, Butcher simply hopes to “keep making stuff that hooks people and makes them laugh.”

It’s a goal shared by Hoi Polloi executive producer Pete Shuttleworth, who says: “Adam is a director who we think is really important - he can create memorable moments and make people smile, and work in a variety of mediums to do that. I’d seen Adam’s award-winning short films on Vimeo, but it’s been a pleasure getting to know him."
