RISING STAR GEORGIA OAKLEY JOINS ELEANOR
28 May 2024

On the evidence of her debut feature 'Blue Jean'. Georgia Oakley - who has just joined the roster at Eleanor Films - has an extraordinary array of directorial skills.

First features are part of the learning curve for any director and often that has to be taken into account when considering a debut, which means concentrating on potential rather than accomplishments.

Not so in Georgia Oakley's case... she's already the real deal.

Set in the late 1980s when a resurgence of reactionary politics in the last years of Margaret Thatcher tried to re-establish the supremacy of heteronormality, 'Blue Jean' is a multilayered examination of the central character's struggle to navigate an impossible landscape. It takes in the full gamut of that experience from the positivity of a joyous shared hedonism to the oppression of being closeted when there is no option to be open about one's sexuality.

The performance drawn from Rosy McEwen in 'Blue Jean' is a testament to the skill of both director and actor. One of the most underrated directorial skills is restraint, and Oakley produces a masterclass of 'show don't tell' in her film, continually giving the audience the benefit of the doubt when it comes to their ability to discern what Jean is thinking and feeling.

So many films constructed along these lines end up with a narrated VO from one of the central characters because of a loss of faith in the audience's ability to join the dots... Oakley's triumph partly derives from her determination to stand firm on this, and the outcome speaks for itself.

Georgia’s narratives unfold beautifully with raw emotion and stunning elegance. Her taste level is evident and her talent is undeniable.

 ”

Georgia Oakley took the fulsome praise of DAVID REVIEWS editor Jason Stone in her stride when providing excellent answers to his enquiries about her film. Speaking with a level of confidence commensurate with her accomplishment, it became clear that the astonishing success of 'Blue Jean' is entirely due to Oakley's ability to stay true to the vision which was richly imagined in the first place. This is an exceedingly rare accomplishment, and worthy of all the plaudits the film has received... and more.

Eleanor's Sophie Gold says of her new signing: "Georgia’s stories are human [and] her narratives unfold beautifully with raw emotion and stunning elegance. Her taste level is evident and her talent is undeniable."

Jack Howard - Eleanor's London MD - adds: "Georgia and I met at the Berlin Film Festival over a decade ago and I’ve been following her trajectory ever since. Her work is compelling to watch; the cinematography, casting, performances, production design, music sync are all on point and intoxicating to experience."
