ANNEX SWOOP FOR SCOTT CARTHY.
21 November 2023

Annex Films have completed the signing of Irish director Scott Carthy on a non-exclusive basis. The move follows a successful Rugby World Cup for Carthy—not as a player, but as the man behind a standout commercial for Land Rover.

When ninety-year-old rugby player Ryuichi Nagayama says, "I'm not going to be told to slow down by anyone," you believe him wholeheartedly. You can also see why he caught the imagination of competition sponsors Land Rover, who sent Carthy to meet a Tokyo legend.

You'd expect Nagayama to score a try or clear out an opposition. Instead, he gets tackled to the ground. Does it make him look weak or vulnerable? Far from it. Carthy knows this is the money shot—the reset that provides the perfect distillation of nonagenarian grit.

I think you need an executive producer and company behind you that worries for you so deeply that there's really nothing else that matters other than getting you work.

 ”

Carthy also made his mark in other ways: "When I first met Fred [Robinson] I told him, truthfully, that I'm working as a tattoo artist, self-taught on my left leg—it's been the thing keeping me going between jobs. He looked shocked, really concerned for me and my clients. "A pain merchant?!" he gasped."

Such work leads executive producer Basil Stephens to say: "We have been watching Scott's career develop for quite a while, and when the Defender Rugby World Cup project came in, we knew he was the perfect director to take it on. We could not have been happier with the results."

"He got me a job within weeks," Carthy says. "I think you need an executive producer and company behind you that worries for you so deeply that there's really nothing else that matters other than getting you work, keeping you busy and away from your alternative vices."
