HORNET SIGNS DIRECTOR CÉSAR PELIZER
13 August 2018

Top animation studio Hornet have added London-based Brazilian director César Pelizer to their roster for worldwide representation, a development they describe as "exciting", and for good reason.

Their press release characterises Pelizer's work as tending "toward the humorously uncomfortable, emotionally abstract and in general leaves one feeling weird yet amused" and if that doesn't leave you wanting to know more, there's something wrong with you.

A fan of comics as a young man, César Pelizer tried art classes but found he was ill-suited to a rigid approach. A different version of the same problem arose when he tried to replicate his favourite Disney characters and discovered that he couldn't. It occurred to him that he'd have to carve his own niche.

This proved a pivotal moment as he recognised that he could create his own rules, even rejecting proper proportions in favour of his own.

He moved to Argentina at the age of 18 to study at university but once again felt trammelled... this time by the structured teaching approach. Despite this, he gained a lot from the experience, as he fell in love with the local art scene. He quit university and secured a job at an Argentine animation studio.

I love how his storytelling is provoking and whimsical at the same time. In this dichotomy of his sensibilities, I find an incredible richness and unique voice.

 ”

His next big move brought him to London. Initially in town for a holiday, he went to meet a friend of a friend who started a conversation which turned into an interview and a job offer to join animation studio weareseventeen.

His time there enabled him to develop his anti-rules philosophy into a very graphical, primitive style with stark forms.

Hornet's EP Hana Shimizu is drawn to this simplicity, "Although Cesar's worlds are minimal, it's not to be mistaken for simple or naive. I love how his storytelling is provoking and whimsical at the same time. In this dichotomy of his sensibilities, I find an incredible richness and unique voice. We're so excited to partner up with him at this stage of his career where his distinct voice adds a new dimension to our family of directors."
