MERMAN CELEBRATE FIRST ANNIVERSARY WITH A BRACE OF SIGNINGS.
11 June 2018

It's a year since Merman opened its doors and they've decided to celebrate their first anniversary by adding a couple of new directors to their roster.

Will Clark and Zak Emerson are the latest to jump aboard the Merman train where they join a fine array of talent drawn from the worlds of advertising and television.

Will Clark

Because of his busy career at Channel 4, it could be said that Will Clark is moonlighting at Merman. But - throughout his career - Clark has managed to balance his promos for Channel 4 and other broadcasters with a parallel life as a TVC director and, looking at his body of work, it's clear that he's translated the skills from these disciplines from one to the other and back again.

In this commercial for Jaguar, Will Clark has Sharon Horgan enjoying the car instead of taking her turn on one of the stalls at a cake sale.

Clark would probably be the first to say that directing someone with Horgan's comedy nous is a doddle, and not just because she's his new boss, but the other elements are note perfect too, so he can probably claim a little of the credit for the commercial's humour and charm.

Clark was also behind the Underdog series of promos for Channel 4, which was clearly a tricky assignment. If you contact Merman about directing your next TVC, perhaps he'll let you see the out-takes!

Zak Emerson

After studying Fine Art at Central Saint Martins in London, Zak Emerson caught the attention of Paul Arden and worked for him as a storyboard artist and creative assistant. This led inevitably to Emerson's decision to make films himself and his debut short 'Suspended' received a number of impressive plaudits.

In 2012, he (and his then directing partner Dan Gifford) made a mock 'Behind the Scenes' film for Heineken, called 'Faking of'. It simultaneously subverted the 'making of' genre and reinforced the ideas in Fredrik Bond's hero film.

Zak Emerson's 2015 film for HSBC shows another side of his filmmaking altogether. Unashamedly emotional, it's a beautifully composed paean to the joy of home ownership.

You can see more of Will Clark's work by visiting the Merman website where you'll also find a collection of Zak Emerson's greatest hits. For more on any of their talented pool of directors, contact Siobhan Murphy on 020 7846 0650 or via email at siobhan@hellomerman.com.
