THE CORNER SHOP COMES FULL CIRCLE
13 June 2021

After successfully running The Corner Shop in LA for a number of years, Anna Hashmi has returned to London to start a new branch in her home town.

For the new venture, she's joined by director Sara Dunlop and executive producer Chia Tucker, and it's hard to imagine a more liked and respected trio. With established talent such as Ellen Kuras, Peter Thwaites, and comedy directing duo Peter Martin, The Corner Shop London has a compelling offer for Hashmi's home market.

This move back across the Atlantic has been accompanied by a spate of new signings, some of which are being announced over the coming days. Unsurprisingly for a company with an all-female management team, The Corner Shop are extremely diligent when it comes to ensuring there is an appropriate representation in the non-white male demographics.

Growing up in the industry in the UK, I never dreamt I would or could run a production company as a mixed-race girl from Croydon.

 ”

To this end, under the watchful eye of pioneering female director Sara Dunlop, the company has a balanced roster of men and women, and on the distaff side this includes Dunlop herself; Macedonian director Tamara Kotevska, who was Oscar-nominated for groundbreaking Honeyland; Russian American filmmaker, photographer and Magnum nominee, Diana Markosian, and Sundance Ignite Fellow writer-director Luna Carmoon.

Anna Hashmi says: "Growing up in the industry in the UK, I never dreamt I would or could run a production company as a mixed-race girl from Croydon. So, I am really excited to be returning to the UK, after working in America for the past 10 years, opening The Corner Shop USA in 2013, winning awards, fostering young directors and building an eclectic, diverse roster of talent. And - we are so lucky to have exceptional executive producer Chia Tucker and our new partner and award-winning director Sara Dunlop, who just happens to be another mixed-race girl from Croydon."

Speaking as a mixed-up kid from Croydon, DAVID REVIEWS's editor could not be more pleased that alumnus from the South London massive are set to make waves in London. For more information, contact Jo Rudolphy (yet another Croydoner) on 07770 986883 or via email using jo@thecornershop.tv.
