Brothers Ryan and Ben Coyle-Larner say they have joined the perfect filmmaking environment at Spindle.
If the name sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because older brother Ben performs as Loyle Carner - the subversive hip-hop artist and Mercury Prize nominee. As luck would have it, promos gave Coyle-Larner a thorough grounding in every aspect of filmmaking.
“I suppose I’d always been directing - I just didn’t know it,” Coyle-Larner says. “When you storyboard a whole video and it comes out exactly how you pictured it in your head and on paper, it’s a special feeling.”
He and Ryan didn’t have to wait long for this feeling with Spindle, immediately producing a stripped-back promo for up-and-coming musician-slash-poet Arlo Parks. Subtle and sensitive in its portrayal of complexities of love across the boundaries of binary sexuality, it’s a thought-provoking debut.
What impressed me most was the level of planning and detail they had already gone into ‘Eugene’. You could tell straight away that they would be gifted storytellers.
Spindle managing director and executive producer Miles Nathan was particularly taken with the brothers’ approach: “What impressed me most was the level of planning and detail they had already gone into ‘Eugene’. You could tell straight away that they would be gifted storytellers.”
Executive producer Leonie Ellis adds: “Their first roll of the dice has resulted in a brilliantly crafted promo that shows a great deal of skill and I can’t wait to connect their vision to future opportunities and help their creative journey. They are a great fit for Spindle.”
