HOMESPUN YARNS DIRECTORS ANNOUNCED.
18 July 2019

The incredibly difficult task of selecting the directors whose films will be made for this year's Homespun Yarns has been completed, and a lucky trio of aspiring filmmakers have been outed!

This year, for the first time, each director has been assigned a mentor to help them bring their vision to the screen, and these have also been announced.

Yada, yada... tell us who they are! The first of this year's contenders is YouTuber Amelia Dimoldenberg. She recently broke into 'old media' when Channel 4 asked her to appear in a Royal Wedding-themed comedy called Meet the Markles. Homespun Yarns offers her the opportunity to sample life on the other side of the camera, where she will be assisted by mentor Declan Lowney of Another Film Co.

An exciting filmmaker and an exciting mentor - can't wait to see what emerges. Who else is taking part? Jamie Gyngell, who is a more experienced filmmaker, having already made a short film – Big Dog, while his bleak examination of the lonely lives of Instagram influencers is currently in development.

Who is mentoring Jamie? That happy task falls to Keith McCarthy of Stink Films.

Sounds like another winning combination… who is the last of the three? Not so much 'who is' as 'who are'! The last slot has been filled by a duo – Catherine Humble and Claire Norowzian. This pair – who are being mentored by Georgi Banks-Davies of Skunk – have very different backgrounds.

Humble is a visiting lecturer in English and Creative Writing at Kingston University, having completed a PhD on Raymond Carver. She has published numerous essays on film and is a long-standing arts journalist for several publications including the Times Literary Supplement, the Telegraph, and the Independent.

Alongside her, Norowzian is an in-house creative who has picked up two children's BAFTAs for films she's made at Nickelodeon, having moved there after a successful time at MTV.

That sounds like an immensely competitive line-up. It'll be exciting to see what they come up with. You'll have to wait until November 21 when the three films will be screened in front of an audience charged with the responsibility of choosing the best of them.

Homespun Yarns' Alice Clarke says: "As usual we had our work cut out but even more so this year given the staggering amount of entries. We have three very special finalists and we're looking forward to seeing how their films develop, especially with this year's added bonus of three outstanding director mentors for them to work with."

Each of these filmmakers already has a pedigree and as they're being supported by an experienced mentor, the quality of the completed films seems assured. DAVID suspects this will be the most keenly anticipated competition yet.
