AMMA ASANTE JOINS PULSE
12 June 2018

Pulse Films have announced their signing of award-winning director Amma Asante to their roster for global representation.

After a successful career as a child actor - she was one of the Grange Hill kids who took 'Just Say No' to the White House - Asante began working as a screenwriter and developing her directorial skills in her late teens. Her feature debut, 'A Way of Life', won the Carl Foreman BAFTA Award for a British director's debut... which isn't a bad start.

Following a hugely positive critical response to the film - which Asante describes as the big break in her career - she went on to work on further feature projects in the US and UK.

'Belle', Asante's 2013 release, tells the true story of Dido Belle - a mixed-race woman who lived in the 1700s. The film drew plaudits for its historical accuracy and production design, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw's performance as the titular character was widely praised by cinema buffs.

Asante continued her meditations on race and identity with her feature 'A United Kingdom'. The film drew on her talent for period drama, depicting the real-life romance between the heir to the throne of Bechuanaland (now Botswana) and a white British woman following World War II.

Asante's third feature film opened the 60th London Film Festival in 2016, with the director delivering an acutely observed romance amidst political and racial turmoil.

Pulse are now pleased to have Asante joining their already talent-laden roster. Davud Kabassioun, Global President of Commercials & Branded, said of the signing: "Amma is a force of nature, one of the most inspiring people I've ever met. She already has created a seminal body of work and as genuine fans, Pulse Films are proud to be in her corner to help continue to evolve her incredible story as a modern filmmaker across multiple genres, formats and platforms."
