FIVE FAVOURITE... CREATURES

Animated mascots have a long history in adland, drawing attention to products as diverse as phone networks, butter, and even toilet paper.

Digital technology and VFX have only enhanced the offerings, and intriguing furry, scaly, and feathery ads have come through the door in droves this year.

So here are five of our favourite... plus a little extra.

1. Lotus - The Forest

Andrex have their puppy; Cushelle has a CG koala; now Lotus have joined the fun with an animatronic yeti. There’s nothing abominable about this beast, though - he just needs the loo, post-haste.

Well-behaved furball that he is, he waits to use the nearby facilities. Good to know even yetis are potty-trained at an early age.

2. Monster - Telepathy

Monster's mascot knows how special you are and proceeds to tell you so in a vaguely threatening manner... at least until he gets tangled up in his own sentences and needs to pause for thought.

He reads your mind (via "Telepathy, obviously."), before loping off into the wide purple yonder. The design of the monster is a skilfully animated cross between creepy and cute.

3. Anchor Spreadable - Grandma

Grandma Monster is surprised when a robotic voice answers her questions out of the blue... There are some great comedy moments in this film, from the old lady's wondering murmur of 'Science...' to the kids being caught out by Siri/Alexa/Cortana.

The animation here is excellent, with the monster designs and execution only going from strength to strength with each outing of this campaign.

4. Doritos - Baby Dragon

As fire hazards go, a baby dragon ranks among the cutest. Doritos nab one for this fun commercial which evokes 80s critters like Gizmo and ALF. Dogs, beware - looks like man’s found a new best friend.

Biscuit’s Jeff Low ensures an idyllic bond between man and miniature beast, including trips to the park and go-karting.

5. Three - Pink Giraffe / Dolphin Sloth

We leave you with a double whammy from Three, who have made CGI beasts somewhat of a speciality in their latest campaign.

First up we have the 'giraffeamingo' which amusingly combines the most distinctive features of mammal and bird. Long-necked and knock-kneed, it's a distinctive, well-executed creation.

And, because DAVID is in a generous mood, we finish up with the adorable 'dolphasloth' - featuring the head and arms of a stoned-looking sloth, and the tail of a peppy dolphin.

We watch him leap for joy, casting rainbows and splashing water to the tune of 'The Piña Colada Song'. The sloth's contented grin is perfect - stellar animation work.
