PRETTYBIRD SWOOP FOR MATT SMUKLER.
16 July 2017

Prettybird have added commercials director Matt Smukler to their forward-thinking roster.

Prettybird are especially keen to establish their new director's UK presence. According to Executive Producer Juliette Larthe, Smukler's work is "undeniably British in its aesthetics".

What drew Prettybird to Smukler? The company values deft storytelling, and Smukler's reel delivered. For instance, this Deutsche Bahn commercial subverts expectations by exploring one football supporter's twin passions.

As well as capturing Germany's zest for the beautiful game, Smukler depicts a gay relationship with understated power.

So good vibes do travel. Smukler places great importance on a positive shoot: "If I'm having fun and am relaxed I find that it can be infectious." This attitude ensures spontaneity and a few pleasant surprises along the way.

It feels like we’re in the middle of this amazing creative renaissance where anything is possible, so when the opportunity to join Prettybird happened, I jumped at it.

 ”

Diversity can be found throughout Smukler's reel. Online bigots riled against his Cheerios commercial for featuring a mixed race family. For Smukler, positivity outweighs anger: "I love clients who are bold and willing to take chances."

Prettybird co-founder Kerstin Emhoff shares this sensibility. "Regardless of distribution, every project needs a strong story; it's rare to find a creative that can take even the smallest moments and tell that story in an engaging way. We are very excited to work with Matt on projects short and long."

Matt Smukler himself is in buoyant mood: "It feels like we're in the middle of this amazing creative renaissance where anything is possible, so when the opportunity to join Prettybird happened, I jumped at it.

"Prettybird has their hands in so many inspiring projects - short, long, and everything in between. I couldn't be happier to join the team."
