A CYCLE FOR LIFE.
21 May 2020

Joe Ogunmokun - a producer at Havas - is using his furlough to 'cycle to France' in his living room to raise money for his friend Ben Chatfield's fight against cancer.

Ogunmokun's original plan was to cycle to France for real but Covid-19 happened and that forced him to adapt his fundraising plans and, instead of enjoying the French countryside as he raised money to extend his friend's life, he's enjoying the slightly more prosaic charms of his Wimbledon home.

When Joe contacted us here at DAVID to let us know what he was up to, his focus was entirely on what his friend and mentor Ben Chatfield has endured. We were very moved by what he told us.

Last year, just a month before his daughter Ruby was born, Ben learned that he was suffering from an aggressive form of brain cancer. Both chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments have failed to stall the tumour's growth and the outlook is exceedingly bleak. His only remaining option is a medication called Avastin which - at £10,000 per treatment - is plainly very expensive. And for Avastin to be effective, Ben requires a new dose every two weeks.

To help him stay alive long enough to witness the early landmarks of his daughter's life, Ben's friends set up a fundraiser to enable him to receive this vital treatment and they've raised close to their original goal of £100,000.

When Joe Ogunmokun's original plan to raise more money for this fund was scuppered by the Covid-19 lockdown, he was not disheartened. He borrowed equipment from his local gym and set about cycling the equivalent distance in his living room. You can follow his progress on this Instagram feed.

But, more importantly, you can contribute to the fund-raising. Any money which cannot be used to prolong Ben's life will be donated to the Royal Marsden hospital so we feel sure you'll agree with us that this is the worthiest of worthy causes.

At a time when we're all stretched financially, it's more difficult than ever to find the money to make donations like this but, it's also more important than ever to stand up for those who need our help, so please give what you can and then get on the 'gram and let Joe know how inspired you are by his devotion to his friend Ben.
