JOSEF BATES REACHES GIDDY NEW HEIGHTS AT PRETTYBIRD.
15 January 2020

English comedy director Josef Bates has expanded the directorial options at PRETTYBIRD with the addition of his name to their already impressive roster.

The Royal Holloway University graduate first made a splash in 2018 with short film ‘Meat’, which blended family drama with self-cannibalism to amusing effect. His latest project, however, draws from personal experience.

Starring Emma Mackey (Sex Education) and Will Merrick (Skins), ‘TIC’ examines the difficulty of dating with Tourette's syndrome. Director Bates was diagnosed with the condition as a teenager, and saw film as the best way to raise awareness as an adult.

‘TIC’ earned positive notices at the London Film Festival, and crucially caught the eye of PRETTYBIRD UK’s Juliette Larthe. “Josef Bates, our Gen Y auteur, is already establishing a fast-paced, kinetic, and satirical edge to his storytelling,” she says. “I am delighted that our determination to show him how much we want to work with him has paid off.”

Joining PRETTYBIRD makes me feel giddy, like they've just asked me to the school disco.

 ”

Bates himself admits: “I have been a secret admirer of everyone at PRETTYBIRD for a while. The work they’ve done, and the directors they work with, are some of the best. To go into the next stage of my career side by side with PRETTYBIRD makes me feel giddy, like they’ve just asked me to the school disco.”

Bates with 'TIC' stars Will Merrick and Emma Mackey.
