It’s been a great year for Naghmeh Pour. She made a splash in March with 'Iran-e Man', a poetic debut inspired by the 'Women, Life, Freedom' movement. Now as 2023 draws to a close, she's joined the New Talent roster at New Land.
Pour fled Iran as a child, but grew up inspired by directors like Mohsen Makhmalbaf ('Kandahar') and Abbas Kiarostami ('Close-Up'). This drove her to become a director’s assistant at New Land, where she learned what it takes to become a standout filmmaker. The progress she's made pleases Sara Samsøe no end.
"It comes with such joy to add Naghmeh Pour to our roster," says New Land's head of production. "Naghmeh has shown such bravery with her first film, 'Iran-e Man', and I can't wait to be a part of her journey going forward—she is truly blooming as a talented young female director."
For those who missed it first time round, 'Iran-e Man' was shot in Morocco instead of Iran for obvious reasons, which adds another geopolitical layer to the piece. If the protagonist dressed and behaved in Iran as she does here, she would be arrested or worse. This adds to the sense of exile that makes work like this necessary.
