MUSTAFA MAZOUZI LEGS IT TO OUTSIDER.
15 November 2018

It takes a lot to stop Mustafa Mazouzi in his tracks. Even a niggling cold wasn't enough to stop him from chatting with DAVID a couple of weeks ago, and it provided the ideal opportunity for us to ask him about his recent arrival at Outsider.

Despite catching Simon Elborne and co's eye with a lively commercial reel, Mazouzi admits that TVCs were never his original intention. A maker of short films and scriptwriter by trade, the Frenchman decided to take a punt on a spec ad for Adidas. After all, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

The gambit paid off as Mazouzi delivered a kinetic ode to amateur runners, which showcased his flair for quick cuts and capturing pure exertion whatever the conditions. The term ‘need for speed' may be trite, but it perfectly sums up Mazouzi's early foray into TVCs.

So where does his knack for kinetic sequences come from? The answer is sheer restlessness: "We are made for walking and running, not sitting in a chair behind a desk". What Mazouzi looks for in these shoots is something more "primitive", and commercials have given him more opportunities to do so.

He admits it was a steep learning curve, juggling time constraints - "You only have twenty seconds to tell their story!" - with the whims of clients - a far cry from the freedom afforded by short films. Fortunately, Mazouzi is a quick learner.

He needed to be on the ball when he shot Seat's 2018 World Cup ad. Time restraints are one thing, wrangling the Spanish national football team on the eve of a World Cup is something else entirely: "It's always very tough because you don't have the time. I don't speak Spanish either, so it was a bit complicated… but they are very professional and focused."

Flitting between elite or aspiring casts like this has granted Mazouzi a sound insight into the sports realm - not bad for a man who insists he was "not prepared for sports commercials".

Such adaptability has given Mazouzi the confidence to pursue new opportunities overseas, leading to what he describes as his "London adventure" with both Outsider and Insider (their sports content wing). Suffice to say, Mazouzi is game for whatever's thrown his way.
