AMELIA HASHEMI IS INDEPENDENT
1 June 2018

Independent Films has signed rising star Amelia Hashemi to their roster of directors. Leeds-born Hashemi began her career in the industry as a casting director, working with a number of renowned directors until she decided her passion also lay behind the camera. It proved an astute move, as her debut short film 'Don't Blame Us Cos We're Famous!' won Best UK short at the East End Film Festival in 2015.

From these auspicious beginnings, Hashemi has become known for her deeply emotional films, which uncover the unusual in the everyday.

Her thought provoking films for Volkswagen, which played with the traditional depiction of disability in advertising and reminded audiences that everyone has places to go, were nominated for an award at the Campaign Big Awards 2017 and went on to screen in cinemas nationwide.

The campaign highlights Hashemi's ability to coax wonderfully naturalistic performances from her cast, and shows a deft lightness of touch which allows the humanity of each story to shine through.

Most recently, Hashemi's second short, 'Night Out', won the 2018 London Calling Award as part of Film London's London Calling Scheme. With feet planted firmly in both the narrative and commercial worlds, we're intrigued to see where Hashemi's Independent career takes her.
