With the fast turnaround of personnel in the modern advertising world, it's unusual to hear an answer like the one given by Jacques Salmon when asked how long he'd been at Sky: "I'll be 36 in August and in July I'll have been with them for eighteen years."
So, having started as a runner at the age of 17, Salmon has been a witness and a participant in the rise of Sky's importance as both a broadcaster and a provider of content.
His ascent was pretty rapid and it speaks volumes for both Jacques Salmon and his employer that he was directing by the time he was 23.
It's not surprising then that after directing Sky promos for twelve years, he feels ready for another challenge and this is one of the key reasons why he's opted to make himself available for TVC work.
That's not to say that working at Sky hasn't provided Salmon with brilliant opportunities. He describes a life of shooting work all around the world and working on a number of exciting projects and often with really talented people on both sides of the camera.
And he's not naive about the cultural shift that's required to work with advertising agencies but the infra-structure at Sky has deliberate echoes of the classic agency/film production company model so he doesn't expect it to hold too many surprises for him.
Although, much of his work is centred around Sky's sports offering, that doesn't mean that his work is limited in scope. The esoteric nature of the broadcaster's promos has provided him with plenty of opportunities to extend his range.
The F1 promo above - for example - was filmed in California with wolves supplied by the same animal handlers who provide them for 'Game of Thrones'. Despite their starry background, the animals were extraordinarily well-behaved:
It's clear that Salmon is really excited by the prospect of making commercials. It's not just an opportunity to expand his range, it's a chance to learn about a whole new area of filmmaking, and having spent very nearly half his life working for Sky, it's perhaps not surprising that he feels so ready for a change.
It's clear from his work that he has the skills to succeed, and it's equally clear from talking to him that he has the right approach too.
